So maybe it’s worth stating it clearly: there are certain things we, as interpreters, simply cannot do. Not because we lack the skills or the willingness, but because our role has very specific boundaries. Understanding those boundaries is exactly what allows us to deliver high-quality work.

We cannot fix unclear speech

When speakers are vague, disorganised, or unprepared, we cannot turn that into a perfectly structured message. Of course, there are moments when we pause, listen carefully, and find ways to follow the train of thought and link ideas so the message flows as well as possible. But if the speech itself and the underlying thinking are unstructured, that will inevitably come through. We interpret what is said—not what should have been said.

We cannot fix the sound

In the booth, everything depends on the quality of the audio. If the sound is distorted, unstable, or poorly managed, it directly affects the interpretation. We do not control the console, the microphones, or the technical setup. That is why professional technical support is not a luxury—it is essential. Without good sound, even the best interpreter cannot deliver quality.

We cannot work without proper input

nterpretation does not happen in isolation. We need context, preparation materials, and a clear understanding of the topic. When we receive incomplete or last-minute information, the cognitive load increases and the risk of inaccuracies grows. Of course, we will still deliver a good result—but having access to materials allows us to perform at the level our clients expect.

We cannot replace communication strategy

If a meeting lacks structure or a message has not been properly developed, interpretation cannot fix that. We do not design communication—we carry it across languages. A well-prepared message will always travel better.

Interpreting is often described as a bridge—and that is exactly what it is. But even the strongest bridge depends on what stands on either side. When expectations are realistic and the conditions are right, communication flows naturally.

Because good interpreting starts long before the booth — it starts with preparation, clarity, and realistic communication.

Βήμα 4: Συγκέντρωσε τα απαραίτητα έγγραφα

Συνήθως θα χρειαστείς:

• Πτυχίο
• Αναλυτική βαθμολογία (Transcript)
• Περιγραφή μαθημάτων (syllabus)
• Ταυτότητα/διαβατήριο

 Πολύ σημαντικό: Τα έγγραφα πρέπει να είναι επίσημα μεταφρασμένα και να φέρουν Apostille. Εαν δεν γνωρίζεις τι είναι η Σφραγίδα Χάγης, σου εξηγούμε εδώ βήμα-βήμα.

Βήμα 5: Απόδειξε γνώση γερμανικών

Σε κάποιες περιπτώσεις απαιτείται:

 επίπεδο τουλάχιστον Β2 – C1

Ιδιαίτερα για επαγγέλματα όπως εκπαίδευση, υγεία κ.λπ.

 Βήμα 6: Περίμενε την αξιολόγηση

Αφού καταθέσεις τα έγγραφα:

• η αίτηση εξετάζεται
• συγκρίνεται με το γερμανικό σύστημα
• λαμβάνεις το αποτέλεσμα

Football coaches are not like company directors giving a formal statement at a conference. They speak with their body before they open their mouth. They express frustration, adrenaline, disappointment or pride through tone, rhythm and even silence. As an interpreter, you need to be able to read these emotional layers instantly. When the coach is angry after a controversial referee decision, your voice must carry that tension—not exaggerated, not softened, but authentically reflected. When he is proud of his team’s effort, you must transmit that warmth in the same breath.

In Barcelona, I experienced this firsthand. A coach who had just come out of a high-stress moment during the match spoke rapidly, with a mixture of tactical explanations and emotional outbursts. The challenge wasn’t just the vocabulary—talking about pressing lines, rotations, high blocks, defensive transitions—it was the pace. Football thinking is fast, and coaches talk as fast as they think. My job was to “talk football,” not serve as a neutral machine. Football language has its own code: a “second ball,” “depth,” “occupying space,” “switching play.” If you translate literally, the meaning is lost. If you interpret the idea through the real football concept, communication flows naturally.

Both the Europa League and Champions League assignments this year brought a different set of challenges. At this higher level, media attention is enormous. Every word the coach says becomes a headline. I remember clearly the pressure of being on the podium, microphones glowing red, cameras inches away, journalists impatient for their quotes. I had to make sure every nuance of his message survived the journey through translation. One wrong term and you could accidentally change the meaning of his whole statement—something that in football can lead to misunderstandings, rumours or unnecessary tension.

Speed is always a difficulty. Sometimes coaches interrupt themselves, jump between topics or use metaphors that only make sense inside the dressing room. You must follow without hesitation. But it is not only about being fast—it is about being fast and accurate. The audience does not forgive mistakes.

Another constant challenge is proximity. You are often standing just a few centimetres from a coach who is exhausted, sweaty, emotionally drained after ninety minutes of play. You must keep your voice stable, your mind sharp and your presence calm. Your job is to be invisible and essential at the same time.

Interpreting in football is participation. You feel the victory, the defeat, the anxiety, the joy. You carry the message, but you also carry the emotion that comes with it. And when you step outside the stadium after the interview lights turn off, you leave knowing you were part of something bigger than language: you were part of the game.

Most professional translators have heard this sentence at some point in their careers: “You’re too expensive. I found someone cheaper.”

While it’s understandable that clients are looking for affordable services, it’s important to clarify that the cost of a translation is not randomly calculated. It reflects a combination of several key factors each of which contributes to the quality and reliability of the final result.

1. Complexity of the Text

Not all texts are created equal. Translating a legal contract, medical report, technical manual, or financial document is very different from translating a restaurant menu or a casual email. Specialized fields require in-depth research, deep knowledge of terminology, and high accuracy, especially when the stakes are high.

The translator’s expertise, often backed by years of study and professional experience, comes at a cost, just like you’d expect from a lawyer, doctor, or engineer.

2. Deadline and Format Requirements

Tight deadlines often mean that translators must rearrange their schedules, pause other projects, and work evenings or weekends. A 25-page document needed in 48 hours? That’s not just “urgent”, as the translator needs to pause everything else to take on the project. Naturally, this affects the price.

Additionally, if a document has a complex layout (tables, footnotes, formatting), or if it’s a scanned file that’s not editable, the extra time needed to work on it is also calculated into the cost.

3. Not All “Translators” Are Professionals

Some clients compare professional translators to people who are simply bilingual or offer cheap services online. But speaking two languages doesn’t make someone a translator, just like owning a stove doesn’t make someone a chef.

Unqualified translators may miss nuances, make terminology errors, or deliver a product that needs to be redone, which ends up costing more in the long run.

But there are also professional translators who undercharge, often undervaluing their own skills. This hurts both the quality of the market and the sustainability of the profession.

4. Other Factors That Influence Cost

A fair translation quote takes into account:

• Text difficulty and length
• Required delivery time
• Quality and format of the source material
• Language pair (some combinations are rarer or more in-demand)
• Subject matter expertise
• Whether the client is a regular or long-term partner

Let’s also not forget that professional translators are business owners too. Their rates must cover:

• Social security contributions
• Professional association fees
• Software licenses and continuous training
• Cost of living

5. You’re Not Just Paying for Words. You’re Paying for Value

Αφορμή για να γράψω αυτές τις σκέψεις που διαβάζετε σήμερα στάθηκαν δυο γεγονότα, που μπορεί να μοιάζουν άσχετα μεταξύ τους και με αντίρροπες δυνάμεις, αλλά, με κάποιον τρόπο, συνδέονται και δημιουργούν έναν χώρο συζήτησης και διαλόγου για την κουήρ μετάφραση την Ελλάδα.

Στις 10 Απριλίου 2025 βρέθηκα στο βιβλιοπωλείο Polyglot στην οδό Ακαδημίας όπου παρακολούθησα με μεγάλη χαρά την παρουσίαση της ανθολογίας κουήρ ποίησης σε μετάφραση προς τα ισπανικά από την καθηγήτρια του Πανεπιστημίου της Μάλαγα, María López Villalba. Να πω την αλήθεια, ανυπομονούσα για την εκδήλωση αυτή και ενθουσιάστηκα με το μικρό αυτό πόνημα, γιατί με μια προσεκτική ανάγνωση, αυτή η δίγλωσση έκδοση έχει να προσφέρει πολλά σχετικά με τη φύση και τις τεχνικές της κουήρ μετάφρασης με γλώσσα εργασίας τα ελληνικά. Σε πρόσφατη συνέντευξή της, η μεταφράστρια αναρωτιέται «Τι μπορώ να κάνω εγώ;», [1] καθώς η μεταφράστρια σκέφτεται τρόπους δράσης για την ανατροπή των υφιστάμενων ιεραρχιών που καταδυναστεύουν κουήρ σώματα και ταυτότητες. Η μετάφραση της εν λόγω ανθολογίας αποτελεί ένα εύγλωττο δείγμα κουήρ μεταφραστικής θεωρίας και πράξης και συμβάλλει στην ορατότητά της.

Από την άλλη, κάθε χρόνο, συμμετέχω στο Φεστιβάλ Πορνό, [2] το οποίο ακούραστα επιμελείται ο Μενέλας, διότι οι ταινίες πορνό, όπως προβάλλονται και πλαισιώνονται στο εν λόγω φεστιβάλ, είναι βαθιά κουήρ ως προς την τεχνική, το περιεχόμενο, την αισθητική τους. Επιπλέον, ως υποτιτλιστής και διαπολιτισμικός διαμεσολαβητής, με ενδιαφέρει να παρατηρώ τρόπους και τεχνικές που μετέρχονται τα διάφορα μεταφραστικά υποκείμενα για την απόδοση των υποτίτλων και τη μετάφραση/διαχείριση του κουήρ περιεχομένου εν γένει, δεδομένου ότι το Φεστιβάλ έχει αποκτήσει αναγνωρισιμότητα και επεκτείνεται σε διάφορες χώρες του κόσμου με επίκεντρο την Αθήνα, άρα την ελληνόφωνη κοινότητα. Πρέπει να αναφερθεί ότι το Φεστιβάλ, με έναν παιγνιώδη τρόπο, χρησιμοποιεί εικόνες, πρακτικές και μύθους της Αρχαίας Ελλάδας, για να τους επανερμηνεύσει και να προωθήσει το Φεστιβάλ μέσα από ένα «ένδοξο» (ή και όχι) κουήρ ελληνικό παρελθόν. Δυστυχώς, στην ενότητα «Γανυμήδη» που ήταν αφιερωμένο σε ταινίες μικρού μήκους ανδρικού γκέι/ομοερωτικού περιεχομένου, οι οποίες προέρχονται κατά κύριο λόγο από την Ευρώπη και τη Λατινική Αμερική, οι υπότιτλοι παρουσιαστήκαν μόνο στα αγγλικά. Από τη μια, η χρήση μόνο των αγγλικών υποτίτλων θέτει εμπόδια στα άτομα που δεν γνωρίζουν καθόλου ή δεν γνωρίζουν καλά αγγλικά. Από την άλλη, ως προς το πεδίο της μετάφρασης, δεν προωθείται η κουήρ μετάφραση ως μέσο για την ανάδειξη τόσο των ταινιών όσο και της πρόσληψής τους στην Ελλάδα. Οι λόγοι πίσω από τη μη μετάφραση ή καλύτερα την αδυναμία μετάφρασης του κουήρ οπτικοακουστικού περιεχομένου είναι ποικίλοι, κυρίως οικονομικοί, θα υπέθετα, αλλά και καλλιτεχνικοί, θα υποπτευόμουν, αλλά δεν θα αναφερθώ μακροσκελώς σε αυτό το θέμα, διότι εκφεύγει από τον σκοπό του παρόντος. Σίγουρα αποτελεί μια σκέψη που μπορεί να αναπτυχθεί περαιτέρω σε μια άλλη απόπειρα καταγραφής σκέψεων για τη μετάφραση. Κατά τη διάρκεια της προβολής, ομολογώ ότι το διασκέδασα, διότι προσπαθούσα να βρω πιθανές αποδόσεις σε όρους, λέξεις, εκφράσεις και λογοπαίγνια στα ελληνικά, τα οποία απηχούν στην κουήρ αισθητική και προσέγγιση της γλώσσας του πρωτοτύπου. Ωστόσο, ένιωθα ότι ένα μεγάλο μέρος του κουήρ περιεχομένου που παράγεται με οπτικοακουστική μορφή, όπως είναι οι ταινίες μικρού μήκους, είτε με λογοτεχνική μορφή, όπως είναι η ποίηση, πολλές φορές και για διάφορους λόγους μένει αμετάφραστο σκοπίμως ή, στην καλύτερη περίπτωση, ενώ υπάρχει η θέληση, δεν υπάρχουν τα οικονομικά μέσα για να επιτευχθεί αυτό.

Για να διεισδύσουμε στον πυρήνα της κουήρ μετάφρασης, χρειαζόμαστε κατά κύριο λόγο δείγματα γραφής και μετάφρασης με κουήρ σκοπιμότητα, για να υπάρξει αυτή η ανατροφοδότηση που θα παράγει θεωρία μέσω της πράξης. Όπως έλεγε ο αγαπημένος μου καθηγητής μετάφρασης, Γιώργος Κεντρωτής, «Για να γίνεις φούρναρης, πρέπει να φουρνίσεις πολλά καρβέλια». Με τον ίδιο τρόπο, για να δούμε τι είναι η κουήρ μετάφραση, πώς εξελίσσεται, τι τεχνικές χρησιμοποιούνται και με ποιον τρόπο στέκεται στην κοινωνία, πρέπει να υπάρχουν δυνατότητες, ευκαιρίες και δείγματα μετάφρασης, με όλα τα λάθη, τις αστοχίες και τις παραλείψεις, για να πούμε ότι η κουήρ μετάφραση είναι ορατή και υπάρχει στη χώρα μας, και έχει πάρει αυτήν τη μορφή.

Τα δυο παραδείγματα που ανέφερα παραπάνω είναι ίσως χαρακτηριστικά για τους τρόπους αντιμετώπισης της κουήρ γραφής στην Ελλάδα. Από τη μια, υπάρχει μια τρομερή άνοδος στην έκδοση κουήρ λογοτεχνίας στην Ελλάδα, είτε πρωτότυπης είτε μεταφρασμένης. Από την άλλη, οικονομικοί περιορισμοί που επιβάλλονται δεν διευκολύνουν πάντα αυτήν την ορατότητα που δίνεται μέσω των αυτόνομων και αυτοοργανωμένων εκδοτικών εγχειρημάτων. Βέβαια, για να είμαι ακριβής, τα τελευταία χρόνια υπάρχει μια ευάριθμη κοινότητα κουήρ μεταφραστικών υποκειμένων που ασχολείται με την κουήρ μετάφραση όχι μόνο ως ενέργημα αλλά και ως θεωρία, με σκοπό να μελετήσουν εις βάθος αυτόν τον χώρο [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] [11] [12] [13]. Συγκεκριμένα, η κουήρ μετάφραση είναι ένας χώρος αναγκαίος για τη μετάφραση στο σύνολό της, γιατί αφορά όλα τα κείμενα και ανατρέπει τις παγιωμένες ιεραρχίες και τις ακλόνητες παραδοχές που έχουμε δημιουργήσει για το «ταξίδι» της μετάφρασης. Η κουήρ μετάφραση εισάγει στην ελληνική λογοτεχνία έργα που θεωρούνται «κουήρ», διότι θέτουν εν αμφιβόλω, διασαλεύουν και επαναπροσδιορίζουν ταυτότητες και παραδοχές.

Έτσι, φέρνουν σε επαφή τα ελληνικά με άλλες γλώσσες και δημιουργείται ένας χώρος συνάντησης του γηγενούς κουήρ με το αλλοδαπό. Αυτή η επαφή και η προσπάθεια μετάφρασης είναι ιδιαιτέρως εποικοδομητικές διαδικασία και εμπλουτίζουν τόσο το Ίδιον όσο και το Έτερον, δηλαδή και την ελληνική και την ξένη γλώσσα, διότι η ελληνική γλώσσα αναμετράται με τον εαυτό της, σκάβει βαθιά και εξερευνά πτυχές της δίκης της κουήρ ιστοριογραφίας μέσα από τις ανισομετρίες και τις ευαίσθητες ισορροπίες μεταξύ των γλωσσών.

The younger generation, more accustomed to digital media and diverse linguistic influences, is increasingly inclined to appreciate subtitling, as it allows them to experience films in their original form while reading the translations.

This makes it particularly costly in countries with established dubbing industries, such as Spain and Italy, where dubbing has become a significant economic sector, generating substantial revenue. The need for high-quality localization drives up the costs in these markets, especially in regions with larger media production budgets like Germany and Spain (Díaz Cintas & Anderman, 2009).

On the other hand, subtitling is a more cost-effective option, as it requires fewer resources and can be produced more quickly, making it the preferred choice in countries with lower labor costs or smaller media budgets, such as Belgium and the Netherlands (Bogucki, 2019).

Psychological and Linguistic Factors

In dubbing-dominant countries, such as Spain and Italy, dubbed content allows viewers to engage more deeply with the visuals without the distraction of reading text. This is especially true for younger audiences, such as children, who may struggle with reading subtitles and prefer a more immersive experience (El Abed & Yazbeck, 2025; Sánchez-Mompeán, 2023). Additionally, dubbing is often viewed as more accessible, enabling viewers to understand the content without requiring reading skills, which can be particularly important for those with lower literacy levels.

Conversely, in countries where subtitling is the norm, like Scandinavia, audiences are accustomed to reading subtitles while watching content, and this practice becomes part of the viewing experience. Subtitling does not hinder the enjoyment for these viewers, who often find it culturally natural to follow the text on the screen while simultaneously processing the spoken language. This cultural adaptability allows viewers to appreciate the original performances, maintaining the authenticity of the actors’ voices, which is often seen as a linguistic advantage in subtitling-preferred regions (Bogucki, 2019).

Urgent translations usually cost more. That’s because translators often juggle multiple projects — typically a mix of larger and smaller assignments to manage workload and income. • Bonus tip: Always send editable files (like Word or Excel). Avoid scans or PDFs, which take extra time to format and often cost more.

Being clear about the purpose and scope from the start avoids endless back-and-forth communication and ensures your translator can offer you the best solution.

3. Don’t Rely on Unqualified Translators or AI for Specialized Content

With the rise of AI and translation tools, it might be tempting to cut corners. But when it comes to legal, medical, financial, or technical texts, accuracy is non-negotiable.

While AI can be a helpful tool in the translator’s workflow, it can’t yet replace humans. In many cases, machine translations need extensive revision and sometimes a complete rewrite to meet professional standards.
